Bankruptcy judge may release testimony of Milwaukee prelates : News Headlines - Catholic Culture

 

Judge Susan Kelley said that she might consider unsealing the testimony of two retired prelates, Archbishop Rembert Weakland and Bishop Richard Sklba, if a settlement is not reached.

The Milwaukee archdiocese has resisted negotiating an agreement with creditors, because its lawyers are still contesting some sex-abuse claims. Judge Kelley indicated that the bishops’ testimony would be germane to the argument over the claims disputed by the archdiocese. Thus, to avoid exposure of the bishops’ testimony, the archdiocese might wish to withdraw its objections and begin negotiations toward a final settlement.
