The Tablet - Cardinal defends coalition split

 

Cardinal Francis George has forcefully defended his decision to require Catholic organisations to break with the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) after the Coalition's board decided to publicly support a same-sex marriage proposal in the Illinois legislature….

Several prominent Catholic lay people, including the former Mayor of Chicago Richard Daley, published an open letter to Cardinal George in the Chicago Tribune calling on the cardinal to "retract his threat to withdraw funds from Catholic organisations that are members of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights."
