A vote “YES” letter to the Aldermen

Per Mr. DeBruyne’s request I am posting this copy of his letter to the Aldermen.

I do not approve of  name calling  and hope that we all can refrain from such.  Mr. DeBruyne does not seem to appreciate the liberty of expression  which Catholic Canon Law allows parishioners who in good conscious are opposed to decisions and pronouncements of the “rulers” of the Catholic Church.   See section 3 of Canon Law 212

Mr. DeBruyne’s letter was printed as a letter to the editor in the August 17, 2011, Rockford Register Star.

Dear Aldermen;

As an elected official in the City of Belvidere you do not deserve to be in the middle of a fight amongst the Catholic Community of Boone County. Nevertheless, you are in the middle. After hearing and reading all of the negative rhetoric, sarcasm, criticism and lies, how could one conclude that we are of one parish family, let alone of the same faith? The discontent is a parish level problem not something that can resolved by the City of Belvidere.

Your vote must be based solely on the City of Belvidere Zoning Ordinance, the Findings of Fact developed by your planning staff and the recommendations of the City Planning & Zoning Commission. It is your right and your responsibility to offer modifications and changes to the recommended zoning, variances & special use permit, in accordance with the City ordinances. Alternatively, you can send this back to the Planning and Zoning Commission and Planning Staff for further investigation, but that does not solve the issues at hand, it only delays the vote.

You now have the unenviable task of sorting “fact from fiction” and making a decision that will undoubtedly lead to more distress amongst the parishioners of St. James Catholic Church. Please do your job, forget the negative rhetoric, the what-ifs and the sentimental pleas to preserve outdated buildings. Vote YES for this project based solely on its merits and the Ordinances of the City of Belvidere. A negative outcome will not help heal our family. A positive outcome will not help heal our family. Healing our parish is in God’s hands.

The City of Belvidere and the entire Boone County Catholic community will truly benefit by your vote in favor of the project.

VOTE YES!
