Child abuse: UN questions Australian government over Vatican stance | Australia news | The Guardian

The federal government(of Australia) has told a UN committee it is up to Australia’s child sex abuse royal commission to get the Vatican to hand over documents about paedophile priests.

Vice chair of the UN Committee Against Torture, Felice Gaer, had queried on Monday whether the Australian government’s refusal to investigate perpetrators of child abuse was “compliant or wilfully inactive”.

The committee sitting to review Australia’s record as a signatory to the Convention Against Torture has received submissions from non-government organisations including two from networks representing Australian survivors of institutional and clerical child sex abuse.

Gaer asked specifically what action the government had taken when Cardinal George Pell told a royal commission it was unreasonable to ask the Vatican to hand over all documents relevant to sex abuse by priests in Australia.

In August the cardinal told a public hearing of the royal commission into institutional responses to child sexual abuse in Melbourne that Vatican documents on specific cases would be and had been supplied but it was not appropriate to hand them all over as they were the private internal documents of a sovereign state – the Holy See.

A Catholic church schism under Pope Francis isn’t out of the question | Andrew Brown | Comment is free | The Guardian

Until this weekend, I had largely believed in the liberal narrative which holds that Pope Francis’s reforms of the Catholic church are unstoppable. But the conservative backlash has been so fierce and so far-reaching that for the first time a split looks a real, if distant, possibility.

One leading conservative, the Australian Cardinal George Pell, published over the weekend a homily he had prepared for the traditional Latin mass at which he started ruminating on papal authority. Pope Francis, he said, was the 266th pope, “and history has seen 37 false or antipopes”.

Why mention them, except to raise the possibility that Francis might turn out to be the 38th false pope, rather than the 266th real one?

Cardinal George Pell set to take stand in child sex abuse royal commission

Cardinal George Pell is due to take the stand at the child sex abuse royal commission on Monday, where he will likely face tough questions over the Catholic Church's handling of abuse claims.

The commission will examine Cardinal Pell's role in the church's treatment of John Ellis, who sought damages for abuse by Father Aidan Duggan at the Sydney Archdiocese's Bass Hill parish.

The abuse, which lasted years, began when Mr Ellis was a 13-year-old altar boy.

The commission has heard the cardinal was in charge of the infamous case in which the church fought Mr Ellis' claim.

AFP: Cardinal says church needs 'better discipline'

Pell was one of eight cardinals from around the world selected by Pope Francis on Saturday to advise him in the new pontiff's first step towards reforming the Catholic Church's opaque administration.

The following story is quite incredible, but who knows what actually happened after the Australian Parliament’s inquiry.

AUSTRALIA'S most powerful Catholic, Cardinal George Pell, was present when a boy raped by a Christian Brother described to another priest what happened, a parliamentary inquiry has been told.

The Victorian government's inquiry into the handling of child abuse by religious and other organisations has been told Cardinal Pell was present when the grade three student at a Ballarat school in the 1960s described to another priest what happened to him.

Cardinal Pell may be asked about the incident after indicating in August he will attend the inquiry if asked.

Catholic Church's secret sex files

THE Australian Catholic Church holds thousands of pages of documents containing the psychosexual profiles of dozens of clergy accused of sexually abusing children and vulnerable adults.

The profiles, often sent to bishops, were created as part of the church's little-known 1997-2008 rehabilitation program for those it described as ''sexual boundary violators''.

It is understood none of the clergy treated under the multi-million-dollar Encompass Australasia program run from Wesley Private Hospital in Sydney was referred to police for investigation.
